Make It A Habit: Tips to Navigate the Incoming Flood of Election News

Whether we like it or not, the 2024 presidential election is around the corner. The first Republican candidate debate kicked off and left plenty to talk about. Here are a few high-level tips for staying sane and evaluating the news you’re consuming:

  1. Beat the algorithm: Social media algorithms serve us what they think we want to see, which can lead to informational echo chambers. Try following a diverse range of social media accounts, not just the ones platforms suggest to you. Make sure they are from varying perspectives and credible sources. 
    • Facebook, IG, Twitter, & TikTok:
      • Engage with (like and comment) and follow accounts/pages you wouldn’t normally follow or that you may sometimes disagree with.

  1. Do your due diligence: Take some time and check the facts! Use reputable sites to verify like:
  2. Breaktime: Choose a few hours a day (and if you want to live on the dangerous side, a few days a week) to take a break from social media. This can relieve stress and anxiety from being inundated with polarizing topics blasting on repeat. Replace the time by doing something nourishing — go for a walk out in nature, eat a good meal, and spend time with those you love. You’ll thank yourself later.
